Can STD Symptoms Show Up Within 48 Hours?
Most STDs take longer than 48 hours to cause any noticeable symptoms — incubation periods for the majority of infections run from several days to a few weeks. A couple of exceptions can, less commonly, act faster.
What typically takes longer
Chlamydia symptoms, when they occur, typically appear 1-3 weeks after exposure. Gonorrhea symptoms in men can appear within a few days in some cases but more commonly take up to two weeks; symptoms in women, when present at all, often take longer to notice. Syphilis's first sign, the primary chancre, typically takes around 3 weeks to appear.
What can occasionally act faster
A first herpes outbreak can occasionally develop within just a couple of days of exposure in some cases, though the more typical range is closer to 2-12 days. If genuinely new symptoms show up within 48 hours of a specific sexual encounter, it's more likely — though not certain — to be an unrelated irritation, a pre-existing condition just being newly noticed, or a non-STD infection, simply because most STDs haven't had time to establish and cause symptoms that quickly.
